Medal of Honor: Staff Sgt. Salvatore Giunta's Parents Interview. (HiDef!)
On October 25, 2007, his unit was attacked by Taliban insurgents, as they walked back to base along a mountain ridge in the Korengal Valley. Armed with AK-47s, rocket-propelled grenades and Soviet-era large machine guns, the Taliban executed an ambush. Defense Department documents revealed that as he returned enemy fire and assisted a wounded soldier in the fighting, he noticed that one of his comrades was missing. Giunta went out to search for Sgt. Josh Brennan, whom he found being dragged away by two Taliban fighters. He pursued the Taliban fighters, killing one of them and inflicting injury on the other. He proceeded to administer first aid to Brennan, who had been shot at least six times; Brennan later died of his wounds. Despite Brennan's death, Giunta's actions gave Brennan's family the opportunity to pay their last respects and give him a proper burial. Afghanistan vet Salvatore Giunta to receive medal of honor
www.nma.tv For his daring rescue of a dying comrade, Sgt. Salvatore Giunta will receive the Medal of Honor from President Barack Obama. This will make him the first living recipient of the Medal of Honor from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Giunta was on patrol with Company B 2nd Battalion, 503 Infantry Regiment in Korengal valley in Afghanistan when they were ambushed by insurgents. Giunta bravely rescued a wounded fellow soldier, Sgt. Joshua C. Brennan, from two insurgents who were dragging him away. Brennan died of his wounds the next day.

Many were just hoping to catch a glimpse of their new hometown hero. "It brings tears to my eyes when I think about him," said Ginny Huisman, an Eastern Iowa native. Alongside his wife, Jennifer, Giunta waved to the crowd from atop a Hiawatha firetruck. Some people along the parade route used the moment to educate. "I've lived in Iowa all my life, for 70 years," said Anogene Varner, "My husband and brothers were in the service and I'm very proud." Varner brought two of her grandchildren to the parade. She hopes the experience will help show them the impact veterans have on America. Many veterans also were at Tuesdays parade. "It hits home, and you have so much respect for a person that puts out this effort," said Mike Wood, a Vietnam veteran. "It's very heart warming, very emotional," said Kurtis Bower, a veteran of the war in Iraq, "To do what Sergeant Giunta did, he experienced loss, he overcame his odds, and he actually came out on top that day."

President Barack Obama will award the Medal of Honor to Army Staff Sgt. Salvatore Giunta in a Nov. 16 White House ceremony, officials announced, Oct. 18. The 25-year-old non-commissioned officer -- who will be the first living soldier since the Vietnam War to receive the nation's top military honor -- learned of his selection in a Sept. 9 phone call from Obama. Giunta was a 22-year-old rifle team leader serving in Afghanistan's Korengal Valley with the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team's Company B, 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, when insurgents attacked his squad the night of Oct. 25, 2007. When approaching insurgents formed an L-shaped ambush, splitting Giunta's squad into two groups, Giunta braved enemy fire to pull a squad member back to cover. He later saved another soldier while trying to connect with the other half of his squad. He saw two insurgents carrying off the second squad member and recovered him while shooting and killing one enemy fighter and wounding and driving off others.
